I must have been sleeping at the wheel when Chocolove’s ruby chocolate bar was announced. I had no idea ruby cacao was a thing. Anybody who knows me knows I have a thing for chocolate. How did I miss this!
My deal with chocolate all began with Hershey’s Chocolate Bar. It was satisfying, but even then I knew Hershey’s chocolate was missing something. I remember one day, my dad surprised my mother with a golden box for her birthday. I have seen golden wrapped chocolate bars before, but never a gold box! My mother wailed in excitement as she hugged and kissed my father on the cheek. I knew whatever was in that box had to be something special. It couldn’t be a puppy I thought, maybe it was jewelry.
How I fell in love with chocolate for the first time
I followed my mother in the kitchen, I wanted to see what was inside of this mystery box. She sat down and removed the top carefully. I peered over her shoulder fixing my eyes on the neatly small squares of chocolate stowed in squared cabins tucked in smooth brown paper.
My eyes widened and my mind raced with wonderful thoughts. I felt like Forrest Gump unwrapping a box of Russel Stover’s chocolates. My heart fluttered as my mother placed a brown shaped oyster in my tiny palm. I took a sniff, the sweet smell kissed my nose and from that moment I fell in love. I too wailed in excitement whenever my father came back from the Godiva Store.
Ruby Cacao beans oooooo
Back then, I believed that Godiva was the Queen of chocolate. To my surprise, there were other chocolates just as royal and even more exquisite to the palate than her. Over time, I learned about the origins of chocolate, cocoa beans and cocoa powder. My mother taught my sister how to bake with cocoa powder. I was blessed to eat homemade chocolate cake, brownies, and other delectable goodies.
As I got older, I discovered white chocolate (not real chocolate) and dark. By that time, dieticians praised dark chocolate for having major health benefits. I’m a lover of chocolate, milk and dark. But very dark chocolate is the love of my life!
Why I tried Chocolove’s Ruby Chocolate bar
I make it a mission to try new chocolate bars. I try to find bars with at least 55 percent cocoa or better. My favorite *Chocolate bars* are Whittaker’s (New Zealand), Green and Blacks, Lily’s, and Endangered Species brand.
With that being said, I don’t know how I missed the introduction of the Chocolove’s Ruby Chocolate Bar. I’m embarrassed that I knew nothing about it’s creation.
Ruby Coco (Chocolate) is said to be made from red unfermented cocoa beans developed by Barry Callebaut, the world’s leading manufacture of high quality chocolate. Ruby chocolate was created in 2017, it looks like I’m late to the party.
It is not brown it’s not white it is Pink
I think Chocolove Ruby cocoa bar is the only chocolate brand out on the national market here in the US. I bought their bar from Sprouts groceries. There was a coupon in my email and at first glance, I was intrigued. I searched for the bar on google and it was pink! Have you ever seen pink natural chocolate before?
It took me 10 seconds to decide whether or not to buy it! I took the bar home to share with my mom (I always share chocolate with my mom). We uncovered the golden wrapper and there it was the pink chocolate!
“This looks weird,” she said.
I agreed, but still I wanted to try. We broke off pieces for each other, one for me and one for her. I popped a square in my mouth and…..
IT WAS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED!
The bar doesn’t taste like any chocolate I have tasted before. I’m not sure if I love it or not. It is different; It doesn’t taste artificial nor was it overly sweet. The bar has a berry-fruit tarty taste, but it isn’t overpowering. It is amazingly smooth, not at all bitter or rough in texture. My mother isn’t a big fan, but I think the taste will grow on her like dark chocolate did.
Would I buy again
The ruby bar brings me back to a simpler time and I’m glad I tried it. It won’t replace it’s dark chocolate counterpart, but it’s something I can have every now and then. Try it and let me know what you think in the comments.
FYI, kit-kat has a ruby bar too!
